A memorial is growing along a daycare in Brownsville along Paredes Line Road.

The memorial is in honor of 4-year-old Logan Urbina, who died Friday after he was left in a van owned by the Learning Club Preschool.

Dozens of people showed up on Monday to pay their respects

"I'm so sorry for the family, and we're just here supporting them,” Brownsville resident Marcy Velez said.

As a mother of three children, Velez said she can only imagine the loss Logan’s family is feeling.

Her friends also feel her pain. Velez said one of her friends had a child who attended the preschool, but pulled them out of it following the death.

“A 4-year-old, that's unacceptable, unacceptable,” Brownsville resident Flor Cantu said. “Just the thought that any mother brings their kids here, so they can take care of them so they can go to work, and this thing happened.”

Cameron County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Mary Esther Sorola pronounced the child dead on Friday.

According to Sorola, two daycare employees took the children on a field trip on Friday morning. They returned at around 11:30 a.m., and forgot Urbina in the van.

Sorola said it was unclear how long Urbina had been in the van.

A news release from the Brownsville Police Department said officers responded to the preschool Friday shortly before 5 p.m. Urbina was pronounced dead at the scene.

Channel 5 News went to the Learning Club Preschool on Monday, and saw the lights at the daycare were on. Channel 5 News called the daycare center and someone answered the phone, but the person who answered hung up as soon as the Channel 5 News reporter asked for a statement regarding the death.

One woman, identified as Karen Silva, was arrested on a charge of injury to a child causing death in connection with the incident.

Silva has since bonded out, and authorities have yet to disclose what her alleged role in Logan’s death was.

With so much still unknown, one thing is clear — a family and a community are mourning the death of a 4-year-old boy.

Sorola said she ordered an autopsy, and is expecting results from it soon.

A GoFundMe has been created to support Urbina's family. To donate, click here.
