A McAllen man was hospitalized for two days after he was attacked by a swarm of bees.

“The doctor said, ‘more than 1,000 bees stung you, I don’t know how you survived that,’” Guadalupe Lozano said.

Lozano was one of two people hospitalized following the June 24 bee attack in his home a t the 4700 block of south 34th Street.

Lozano is recovering at home, and said the bees attacked as he was doing yard work.

“My doctor said, ‘if you were allergic to bees, you would’ve died,’” Lozano said.

Bees were still seen coming out from under Lozano’s shed on Monday.

Lozano’s recovery comes as the city sent out a Monday public service announcement warning residents that bees are more active this time of year.

Rio Grande Valley beekeeper Walter Schumacher echoed McAllen’s announcement.

“If you see bees, the best thing to do is to call a professional,” Schumacher said.

Schumacher said he's been busy removing beehives from nooks and crannies outside people's houses and yards since March 2025.

According to Schumacher, it is currently the perfect weather for bees.

“With all the rains that we've had and the good temperature, honey bees are making other colonies to send out,” Schumacher said.

Bees will be active through until October, and are trying to find new homes.

Schumacher said bees could see people getting too close as a threat. It’s why those who encounter bees are urged to:

- Stay calm
- Not run or swat the bees
- Go inside a building or a car, this will keep more bees from stinging you
- Call 9-1-1 if you need medical help.

Lozano said he is still seeing a doctor over the bee attack, and that he agrees it's best to stay calm if you do find yourself surrounded by bees.
