Sandbag distribution events announced throughout the Valley

Several cities across the Rio Grande Valley announced sandbag distributions ahead of scattered thunderstorms in the forecast for this weekend. 

Below is a list of sandbag distributions throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Check back for updates as more sandbag distribution events are announced. 

CAMERON COUNTY

City of Harlingen

The city of Harlingen will distribute sandbags on Friday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the city's public works facility, located at 404 S. 54th St.

Harlingen residents must bring their ID and a water bill.

City of La Feria

La Feria residents can get five bags per household on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the city public works warehouse, located at 717 W. 1st St.

The self-serve distribution event will from from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

City of San Benito

The city of San Benito will be providing sandbags on Friday, May 2 at the City Service Center, located at 925 W. Stenger St.

The sandbag distribution event will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

HIDALGO COUNTY

Hidalgo County Precinct 1

Hidalgo County Precinct 1 will have a self-serve sandbag station on Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunrise Hill Park Precinct 1 Operations Facility, located at 5230 Mile 11 North in Mercedes.

Residents will be limited to six sandbags per vehicle.

City of Alamo

Alamo residents can fill up to five sandbags. at the Alamo City Hall — located at 420 N. Tower Rd. — or the city public works building — located at 803 S. Tower Rd.

 City of Mercedes

The city of Mercedes' Public Works Department is offering sandbags to residents.

Bags are being provided, but residents must bring their own shovels at the knights of Columbus parking lot at 150 N. Ohio Ave.

The distribution events are set for Thursday, May 1 from 4:30 p.m. until sand runs out.

A second distribution event is set for Friday, May 2 from 11 a.m. until sand runs out.

City of Mission

The city of Mission will hold a self-serve sandbag distribution event on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Speer Memorial Library, located at 801 E. 12th St.

Residents are encouraged to bring their own shovels. 

City of Weslaco

A self-fill sandbag station is available anytime at Weslaco City Hall, located at 255 S. Kansas Ave.

Free, empty sandbags will be provided at city hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Proof of residency, and a shovel, is required.

City of McAllen

The city of McAllen will provide self-serve sandbags for residents on Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the West Side Park, located at 1000 South Ware Road.

Proof of McAllen residency or business location is required to receive sandbags.

Sandbags will be available on a first come, first served basis. Residents will be limited to six sandbags per household, and businesses will be limited to 12 sandbags.

City of San Juan

The city of San Juan will be distributing sandbags on Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting and while supplies last.

Residents can pick up sandbags at the San Juan Municipal Park, at the east side parking lot. They are asking residents to enter through 1st Street.

Residents can also pick up sandbags at the San Juan Sports Complex, located at 1419 South San Antonio Avenue.

On Saturday, the city will host a second distribution event from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the municipal park only.

Proof of residency is required, residents can either provide a utility bill or a valid ID. Residents will be limited to six sandbags and businesses will be limited to 10.

City of Donna

The city of Donna will be providing self-serve sandbags on Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1404 Silver Avenue.

Residents are required to show proof of residency by providing a valid photo ID and water bill. They will also need to bring their own shovel.

Residents and businesses will be limited to six sandbags only.

City of Elsa

The city of Elsa will be providing self-serve sandbags on Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Public Works Shop, located at 500 North Fannin Street.

The city will be providing bags and residents will need to bring their own shovels.

City of Pharr

The city of Pharr is offering self-serve sandbags on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Residents can grab sandbags at the Pharr EMS Headquarters, located at 3000 North Cage Boulevard, or at the Pharr Development and Research Center, located at 850 West Dicker Road.

Proof of residency is required. Residents must show a valid ID or water bill.

Residents will be limited to six sandbags per household, and businesses will be limited to 12 sandbags only.

City of Progreso

The city of Progreso is distributing free sandbags on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Progreso Police Department, located at 810 North Business Farm To Market 1015.

Residents must provide proof of residency and will be limited to four sandbags only.

City of Edinburg

The city of Edinburg will hold a drive-thru sandbag distribution event on Friday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Edinburg Service Center, located at 1201 North Doolittle Road.

Residents will be limited to six sandbags and businesses will be limited to eight sandbags only.

STARR COUNTY

City of La Grulla

The city of La Grulla will give away sandbags on Friday, May 2 at the La Grulla Fire Station.

The distribution event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Limit of 3 sandbags per door. 

Rio Grande City

Sandbags for Rio Grande City residents will be provided on Friday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 632 W. Eisenhower.

Bags and sands will be provided. Proof of residency is required.

City of Roma

The city of Roma will be providing self-serve sandbags on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Roma Community Center, located at 677 East 6th Street.

The city will provide bags and residents will need to bring their own shovels.

Residents will be limited to five bags per household, and businesses will be limited to seven bags only.
