Sharyland Pioneer star athlete Derek Thompson is taking his talents as a shot put and discus thrower to Tallahassee after signing with Florida State on Wednesday afternoon.

Last season, Thompson broke a shot put school record with a throw of 64 feet and four inches. The record had been held by his brother, who went on to compete at Incarnate Word.

"I wanted to try something different get out of Texas and I couldn't think of a better state than Florida; the campus there was amazing," Thompson said. "The coaches, I loved all the coaches; just the environment they provided and the people, so just all that stuff came together and it felt like it was a pretty easy choice to me."
