A Donna man is warning others to seek help after he helped a man who was bitten by a rattlesnake at the Jaime Zapata Boat Ramp near Brownsville.

The snake was hiding underneath the portable toilets when it bit a man in the leg on Sunday.

Ernesto Garza was at the boat ramp with his wife when they saw a man limping.

“The elderly man was in obvious pain and I advised him that he needed to go ahead and seek medical attention because a rattlesnake bite is something that's not taken lightly,” Garza said.

Garza said nobody around the area knew how to react.

“There was hesitation at first, but the people there were able to convince him that he needed to seek immediate medical help,” Garza said.

It's advice experts from the Gladys Porter Zoo agree with. As the zoo’s associate curator, Chris Bednarski said if you see a snake, try to stay away.

"The more likely to get bit is when you're interacting with the animal. Leaving the animals alone is always the safest bet,” Bednarski said.

Bednarski said when you’re around nature, you always need to be aware of your surroundings.

“Snakes may slither toward you, but 99% of the time it's because there's somewhere to hide that they know behind the person, snakes don't chase people,” Bedsnarki said.

Bednarski said most people recover from venomous snake bites as long as the person is able to get an anti-venom.

If you are bitten by a rattlesnake, experts say it's best to call 911.
