Bulldozers were spotted Wednesday clearing land at 1910 FM 511 in Brownsville.
According to the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, the land is being cleared to make way for a new, 62,000-square-foot Amazon delivery station.
Packages at the delivery station will come from fulfillment and sorting centers. The packages will then be loaded on to delivery vehicles.
Amazon said in a statement that the decision to come to Brownsville is to better serve customers in the surrounding area.
Gilberto Salinas, the CEO of the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, said the new delivery station is a sign of the city’s economic growth.
“Brownsville now can say that it is becoming a hub for space, for energy and for technology,” Salinas said.
According to Salinas, the facility will create jobs, capital investment, and suppliers and vendors that follow Amazon.
“What we're seeing is that part of town is quickly starting to become the new center of town,” Salinas said.
The new Brownsville Industrial Park is being built next to the future site of the Amazon delivery station.
Channel 5 News reached out to Amazon to ask for a timeline of the station’s construction, and to ask how many jobs that station would create.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Amazon said launch plans for the station are in the very early stages.
